Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 6: As part of the ongoing efforts to promote backyard poultry farming and enhance rural livelihood opportunities, the Department of Animal Husbandry distributed 1059 Nos. of chicks and ducklings to the farmers of Kadamtala on Sept. 4. The chicks were supplied from the Central Hatchery, Livestock Farm Complex, Dollygunj. The initiative aims to encourage small and marginal farmers to adopt backyard poultry farming as an additional source of income and nutritional support.
Vanaraja birds are well suited for backyard rearing under rural conditions. They are hardy, disease-resistant, and capable of thriving on locally available feed resources. The breed is known for its dual-purpose utility, providing both good quality meat and a moderate level of egg production. Nicobari birds are egg producing indigenous breed and are disease resistant. Kuttanad Ducks are valued for their excellent egg laying capacity whereas Vigova Ducks are broiler ducks and are valued for meat purpose.
The Department continues its commitment to promote sustainable poultry development by supplying improved backyard poultry varieties to different parts of the Islands.
