
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 11: The Andaman & Nicobar State Chess Championship 2026, organized by the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA), commenced today at the CPWD Multipurpose Hall, Ranchi Basti, Sri Vijaya Puram, with around 240 players from across the Islands participating with great enthusiasm, including players selected from the North & Middle Andaman District Chess Championship 2026.
The three-day championship, being held from September 11 to 13 in the Classical format over 9 rounds, features participants ranging from 4 years to over 70 years, reflecting the growing popularity of chess across generations. With a total cash prize of ₹1,00,000 (Rupees One Lakh) and 60 trophies provides significant recognition and encouragement to players across various categories.
Shri Vinayak Chamadia, IAS, Secretary (IP&T), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the championship by making the ceremonial first move on the first board. Addressing the players, parents and spectators, he appreciated the enthusiasm of the chess community and lauded ANCA’s sustained efforts in promoting chess through regular tournaments, coaching programmes, and opportunities for players. He encouraged all participants to give their best and play in the true spirit of sportsmanship, wishing them, “May the best player win.”
The championship carries added significance as the top four players will be selected to represent the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at the National Chess Championship 2026, scheduled to be held in Uttar Pradesh in December. The event thus provides a valuable pathway for chess players from the Islands to progress from district and State-level competition to the national stage.
The championship will conclude on September 13 with a prize distribution ceremony, marking the culmination of three days of intense competition and celebration of chess talent from across the Islands.
