I am happy to know that A&N Islands is observing World Rabies Day 2026 along with the rest of the world.
The theme of this year’s observance, “Stronger Together,” highlights the importance of collective and coordinated efforts in preventing and eliminating rabies. Effective prevention requires close cooperation among the community, veterinary and healthcare professionals, animal welfare organisations and the Administration, in keeping with the “One Health” approach that recognises the interdependence of human, animal and environmental health.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands take pride in maintaining their rabies-free status. With increasing connectivity and movement of people and animals, continued vigilance is essential to safeguard this achievement. Timely vaccination, effective animal health surveillance, responsible pet ownership and appropriate monitoring at points of entry remain vital preventive measures.
I commend the sustained efforts of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services and all concerned stakeholders in strengthening animal healthcare, surveillance and preventive measures across the Islands. I also urge all Islanders to extend their cooperation and actively contribute to these efforts.
Let us reaffirm our collective resolve to protect the rabies-free status of our Islands and ensure a safe and healthy environment for both people and animals.
Together, through vigilance, responsibility and coordinated action, let us keep the Andaman and Nicobar Islands safe, healthy and free from rabies.
