76th Van Mahotsav Celebrated at Biological Park Chidiyatapu

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 9: The 76th Van Mahotsav, a festival dedicated to tree planting at the onset of the monsoon, was celebrated with enthusiasm at the Biological Park, Chidiyatapu by staff and workers.

On the occasion, fruit-bearing Jamun (Syzygium spp.) seedlings were planted in vacant forest areas, while littoral species Poon (Calophyllum spp.) were planted along the coastal area. Once matured, the Jamun trees are expected to support local and endemic bird species, especially pigeons by providing a valuable food source. The Poon trees, which are otherwise difficult to establish naturally in coastal regions, are envisioned as future sustainable tree crops.

As part of the outreach initiative, the team also visited Chidiyatapu village, where they interacted with the local community. Lemon, Orange and Guava seedlings were distributed and planted alongside the villagers, with encouragement to continue growing fruit-bearing trees in their backyards. These species are expected to contribute to the villagers’ livelihoods in the future.

Shri A.C. Tilak, Deputy Director of Biological Park, Chidiyatapu, highlighted the nutritional and economic benefits of citrus species. He also informed the villagers that the Forest Deptt. will be distributing fruit-bearing and ornamental seedlings free of cost throughout the month of July.
