ICAR-CIARI Granted Patent for Fly Repellent

Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 16: Patent has been granted to ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute for an invention entitled: “Fly Repellent Composition and Method Of Preparation Thereof” on 12.09.2025.

Flies are important problem from the point of human and animal health. They transmit diseases in animal and as well as human. This may be by mechanical means or in otherwise may serve as intermediate host of a parasite. These harmful effects are done by the adult stage. Other condition known as myiasis is caused by the larval stage of the flies which is popularly known as maggot wound. Flies are controlled basically by chemical or biological method. In the line of advanced methods, this invention describes a unique fly repellent blended with chemical and indigenous components in different permutation and combination. This formulation is in a spray form and ready-to-use spray formulation composed of three chemical compounds blended with a non-toxic organic polar solvent and essential oils. All ingredients are safe for humans, animals, and the environment. The product effectively repels house flies and flesh flies for up to 4 hours in open areas such as fish markets and animal sheds, and up to 24 hours in enclosed spaces like sweet shops, bakeries, and homes.

This has been commercialised with Island entrepreneur Mr Sainath Shenoy, C/O Mahalasa Agro Products, South Andaman, Sri Vijaya Puram. The team associated with this invention include Dr. Talaviya Harshangkumar, Dr. Arun Kumar De, Dr. D. Bhattacharya, Dr. P. Perumal, Dr. Abhilash, Dr. T. Sujatha, Dr. Jai Sunder and Dr. E. B. Chakurkar.
