The Andaman & Nicobar Islands possess two of the most fascinating natural wonders in India, Barren Island, home to the nation’s only active volcano, and the Mud Volcano at Baratang, a rare geological marvel found in very few parts of the world.
Yet, these extraordinary sites remain under-promoted and underutilized as tourist destinations. Developing volcano tourism with eco-sensitive infrastructure, guided tours, interpretation centres, and controlled visitor access, can open up a new niche in adventure and scientific tourism.
Barren Island, with its surreal landscape and occasional volcanic activity, offers a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle for global travellers, researchers, and photographers. A unique concept can be introduced. Government or private small ships or luxury cruise boats can anchor at a safe distance from the island during the evening or night, allowing tourists to view the glowing volcanic crater under expert supervision. These vessels can offer onboard sleeping or seating facilities, creating an unforgettable experience of nature’s power and beauty. Half-day or overnight cruise packages can be designed, combining safety with comfort.
Similarly, the Mud Volcano at Baratang can be developed into an educational and eco-tourism site, with safe viewing decks, interpretative signage, and local guides trained to explain the science behind these fascinating eruptions. Integrated packages can combine visits to the mud volcano, limestone caves, and mangrove creeks, providing a complete nature experience.
By promoting these destinations responsibly, the Islands can generate significant tourism revenue, create local employment opportunities, and strengthen their position on the global eco-tourism map, all while ensuring environmental protection and sustainable visitor management.
It’s time to harness the untapped potential of volcano tourism in the Andamans, a rare blend of nature, adventure, and education, unmatched anywhere else in India.
