Exercise Aims to Strengthen Collective Preparedness Among M-SAR Stakeholders

Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 28 (PIB): A regional-level Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR) Exercise – SAREX 2025 was conducted by the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (ASN) under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) at Sri Vijaya Puram on 27–28 November 2025.
The exercise aimed to strengthen collective preparedness among all M-SAR stakeholders, with emphasis on coordination, interoperability, and operational readiness for Mass Rescue Operations (MROs) at sea. It provided a valuable platform to refine operational procedures, validate communication channels, and reinforce rapid-response mechanisms for maritime contingencies.
The activity witnessed wide participation from various local M-SAR stakeholders and resource agencies across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. On 27 November, a Table-Top Exercise simulated a large-scale rescue scenario, enabling agencies to assess coordinated decision-making processes and efficient information flow. This was followed by a Sea Exercise on 28 November, demonstrating the rescue of passengers from a distressed vessel, including medical triage, casualty evacuation, and other emergency response procedures.
Coast Guard ships and aircraft, along with a vessel from the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), participated in the exercise, showcasing maritime rescue techniques, medical evacuation procedures, and firefighting capabilities at sea.
The joint involvement of maritime, emergency, and civil agencies highlighted the importance of integrated response efforts, significantly enhancing regional preparedness for real-world contingencies. Such collaborative exercises foster operational synergy and build confidence among all stakeholders, ensuring cohesive and effective responses during maritime emergencies.
