
Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 4: The Andaman & Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), organized a series of awareness programmes across North & Middle Andaman, South Andaman, and Nicobar Districts as part of the observance of National Pollution Control Day 2025. The day is marked annually in memory of the victims of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, underscoring the importance of environmental safety and pollution prevention.
Awareness activities, painting competitions for senior students, Power Point presentations, screening of environment-related films and distribution of cotton cloth bags were conducted by Shri Satyanarayana V, Librarian, DST to promote reduction of single-use plastics held in various schools in North & Middle Andaman.
In South Andaman District, PPT presentations were delivered by Dr. Minakshi Dash, Scientist, and Ms. Ishita Anand, Junior Scientific Assistant in various schools. Short films related to pollution were screened to reinforce the importance of environmental conservation. Students actively engaged in the interactive Q&A session following the screening.
A painting competition for junior level and senior level students on the theme ‘clean air, green earth: a step towards sustainable living’ was held on Nov. 29 at the Awareness Hub, DST, Dollygunj with participation from various schools. In the junior level competition, Aaliya Fathima, Class VI, GSSS Girls stood First position, K. Srinidhi, Class V, VKV, SVP as Second position and S. Devi, Class VI, GSSS, Mohanpura with third position.
At Campbell Bay in Nicobar District, a painting competition was conducted with senior level students of PM Shri GSSS Campbell Bay in which P. Likhitha, Class IX adjudged first position, Akancha Tirkey, Class IX with second position and G. Bhaskara Rao, Class IX with third position.
At prominent Petrol Stations of South Andaman viz. Lamba Line, Bathubasti, Corbyn’s Cove circle and at Jodakilan, mass sticker pasting event with the message ‘Walk more Drive safe’ was conducted which covered more than 200 vehicles creating awareness about the Air Pollution through vehicular emissions.
The Director (Science & Technology) concluded the observance by awarding cash prizes to winners of the painting competitions at junior and senior levels conducted in South Andaman area.
