CRC A&N Islands Observes World Disability Day 2025 with the Theme ‘Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress’

Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec. 4: The Composite Regional Centre (CRC), A & N Islands, under the aegis of NIEPMD (Divyangjan), DEPwD, MSJ&E, Govt. of India, observed World Disability Day 2025 at the Megapode Conference Hall yesterday in association with BRW Entertainments. This year’s global theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” set the tone for the event, underscoring the need for systems and opportunities that ensure accessibility, independence, and equity.

The programme was graced by Dr. Sachin Shinde, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, A&N Administration as the chief guest, and Shri Pravesh Ranjan Jha, Secretary, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, as the guest of honour.

In his address, the chief guest reiterated the Administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). He remarked that disabilities may arise due to various reasons, making it essential to have a strong healthcare delivery system and robust social support mechanisms for early detection. He added that timely interventions can significantly reduce long-term impacts and improve quality of life. Dr. Shinde emphasized the crucial role of skill development training for Children with Special Needs. He praised CRC for providing multiple interventions aimed at equipping children with essential skills that help them become self-reliant and contributing members of society.

Secretary, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs also appreciated CRC’s initiatives and encouraged continued efforts to ensure meaningful inclusion and representation of persons with disabilities in all spheres of life.

Earlier, the event commenced with a welcome and keynote address by Smti. Sumitha Mol. S, Director, CRC A&N Islands, who highlighted the significance of the occasion and emphasized that disability inclusion must grow beyond compliance to become a shared societal value. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from parents, children, disability advocates, volunteers from ANCOL and the community.

The celebration featured cultural performances, including a patriotic piano recital by Master Goutham, which captivated the audience. More than 100 children and parents participated in the programme, which remained lively, engaging, and emotionally inspiring throughout.

As a gesture of acknowledgment, CRC honoured key supporters with mementos and decorative flowerpots made with love by trainees with disabilities. The programme concluded with the vibrant cultural performance by Special Children, distribution of gifts, certificates, and recognition awards to achievers, performers, and participating children. CRC reaffirmed its continued commitment to strengthening rehabilitation services, skill development, accessibility, early intervention, and livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
