Chief of Defence Staff Undertakes Visit to Andaman and Nicobar Command

Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 2: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC arrived on 02 Jan on a two-day visit to Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) to review the operational role of the Command, assess progress of infrastructure development and strengthen joint services synergy in the strategically vital island territories.

As part of the visit, the CDS first arrived at Air Force Station Car Nicobar, a key operational airbase in Andaman and Nicobar group of islands. He was received by Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar AVSM, NM, Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command and Air Commodore Kamal Chadha, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Component Headquarters.

At Air Force Station Car Nicobar, the CDS inaugurated the newly redeveloped runway along with associated upgraded infrastructure, marking a major milestone in enhancement of critical aviation infrastructure in the islands. The upgraded runway will significantly augment air operations including fighter aircraft operations and provide improved capability for induction, housing and sustenance of frontline combat assets.

During the visit, the CDS also inaugurated an additional aviation fuel storage facility. This enhancement will extend operational range and endurance of aircraft, enabling rapid deployment, sustained air presence and improved mission readiness.

The upgraded infrastructure will also support the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS–UDAN), improving civil air connectivity to remote island areas. It will further enhance Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) capability by enabling swift mobilisation of resources during natural disasters and emergencies in the earthquake and tsunami prone region and adjoining areas.

Over the course of the visit, the CDS reviewed the operational role of Andaman and Nicobar Command, ongoing infrastructure development and the level of joint services integration among the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. He emphasised the importance of seamless coordination to strengthen surveillance, deterrence and rapid response capability in the region.

During the visit, the CDS addressed personnel of Andaman and Nicobar Command, commending them for their professionalism, high state of readiness and steadfast commitment in safeguarding national interests in the island territories. Emphasising the unique strategic importance of ANC, he exhorted all ranks to continue fostering jointness, adaptability and operational excellence while remaining prepared to respond swiftly to emerging challenges.

Highlighting the strategic significance of the island territories, the CDS reiterated that these initiatives are vital for protection of India’s sovereign territorial waters and safeguarding national maritime interests. The visit reflects the Government of India’s continued focus on modernising dual-use defence infrastructure, enhancing operational capability and ensuring that security and development progress in tandem.
