Katchal, Jan. 12: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Kamorta, in collaboration with UTATMA (Union Territory Agriculture Technology Management Agency), conducted a comprehensive two-day training programme on Jan. 8 and 9, at E-wall Village, Katchal Island. The programme focused on the crucial topic ‘Care and Management of Calf, Kid and Pregnant Cattle and Goat,’ with the primary objective of equipping local livestock farmers with scientific knowledge and best practices for improved animal health, nutrition and productivity during the most vulnerable early growth and pregnancy stages.
The training sessions covered a wide range of practical and essential aspects, including proper colostrum feeding for newborns, balanced nutrition for growing calves and kids, mineral and vitamin supplementation, deworming and vaccination schedules, early detection and management of common health issues, scientific housing and hygiene practices, pregnancy diagnosis, care during advanced gestation, preparation for safe parturition, and post-partum management of dams to ensure healthy offspring and sustained milk production. Resource persons from the Department delivered detailed demonstrations, interactive discussions and hands-on guidance tailored to the unique island conditions and small-holder farming systems prevalent in Nicobar District.
Shri S. Samson, Vice-Captain, Katchal, graced the programme and actively encouraged the participating farmers to adopt the improved livestock management practices demonstrated during the training. He highlighted how scientific rearing can significantly enhance animal health, reduce mortality rates in young stock, increase milk yield and overall farm income, thereby contributing to better livelihoods for rural families in the islands.
The programme saw enthusiastic participation from a large number of local cattle and goat rearers. The training concluded on Jan. 9, with farmers expressing deep appreciation for the timely and relevant content.
