Swaraj Dweep, Aug 24: As part of its continued efforts to strengthen fire safety, emergency preparedness and guest safety across the hospitality sector, the Fire Service Department, A & N Police Fire Service in coordination with the Hoteliers Association of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, organised a three-day Fire Safety Training and Awareness Programme for the staff of hotels, resorts and restaurants at Swaraj Dweep, from 20th to 22nd August 2026.
The three-day programme was attended by approximately 140 employees from various hotels and restaurant establishments across the island. The initiative was aimed at equipping frontline hospitality personnel with practical knowledge and skills to prevent fire incidents, respond appropriately during emergencies and ensure the safety and orderly evacuation of guests and staff.
The training covered key aspects of fire safety and emergency preparedness relevant to the hospitality sector. The training sessions included an overview of different types and classes of fire, their common causes, preventive measures and the appropriate methods of extinguishing them. Participants were also briefed on basic life-saving and evacuation techniques, including the safe movement of guests and staff and procedures for assisting persons who may require additional support.
Fire Service officers explained the appropriate response to a fire call, including raising the alarm, informing the Fire Service department and initiating evacuation. Practical guidance was provided on the deployment of designated teams within hotel and resort premises, with responsibilities assigned for fire detection and alarm response, guest evacuation, initial firefighting, first aid, communication and coordination with the responding Fire Service team. The importance of clearly defined roles and coordinated action was emphasised to ensure an effective response.
The programme also included interactive sessions and live demonstrations on the correct use of fire extinguishers and basic firefighting techniques. Participants were sensitised to specific fire hazards and preventive measures relating to LPG handling, electrical equipment, kitchen operations and cooking-oil and grease fires. Guidance was also provided on emergency exits, evacuation routes and other essential fire-safety precautions.
The training also highlighted the importance of regular fire-safety checks, proper placement and maintenance of fire extinguishers, clear emergency signage and periodic fire drills in hotel, resort and restaurant establishments. Participants were also encouraged to be familiar with their assigned responsibilities and emergency procedures to ensure a coordinated response when required.
