APWD Organises Water Concert Under the Tagline ‘Every Drop Counts’

Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb. 3: Water, the essence of life, is central to sustainable development and human well-being. Despite being surrounded by the vast ocean, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands rely on limited freshwater sources, making water availability a constant challenge. Rapid urbanization, changing lifestyles, and the growing impacts of climate change have further strained these fragile resources, underscoring the urgent need for water conservation.

In response to this pressing concern, the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has been undertaking sustained efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure across the islands. These initiatives include promotion of rainwater harvesting, augmentation of storage capacity, and ensuring efficient and equitable distribution of water in both urban and rural areas. However, the Department emphasizes that infrastructure alone cannot ensure water security. Public awareness, community participation, and responsible individual behaviour are equally vital in safeguarding this precious natural resource.

To spread awareness and encourage community involvement, APWD organized a Water Concert under the tagline ‘Every Drop Counts’, creatively using music and cultural expressions to connect with the public. The programme aimed to inspire citizens to recognize the value of water and adopt simple yet impactful conservation practices such as fixing leaking taps, using water judiciously, protecting natural water bodies, reusing water wherever possible, and embracing water-efficient habits at homes and workplaces. The message ‘Jab Jal Rahega Tabhi Toh Hamara Kal Rahega’ resonated strongly with the audience, highlighting water as the elixir of life and a foundation for a secure future.

The event was attended by the Special Secretary (PWD), Councillors of Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, and a large gathering of the general public. A water conservation pledge was administered, along with a signature campaign, reaffirming collective commitment towards responsible water use.

The Water Concert served as a powerful reminder that water is a shared heritage and its conservation is a responsibility owed to future generations. Through awareness, collective effort, and sustained commitment, water security for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands can be ensured, preserving the ecological balance that makes the islands a priceless treasure of the nation. “Save Water, Save Life, and Secure the Future of Our Islands”.
