Department of Environment & Forests Felicitates its Mazdoors for their Exemplary Courage and Prompt Action During Pawan Hans Heli Crash at Mayabunder

Sri Vijaya Puram, March 2: The Mazdoors of Wildlife Division, Mayabunder, Department of Environment & Forests were felicitated today in recognition of their exemplary courage and prompt action in saving precious lives during the forced landing of a Helicopter in the sea near Tota Tikery, Mayabunder.

It is pertinent to mention that on 24.2.2026, during the morning hours, a helicopter of Pawan Hans Limited enroute to Mayabunder from Rangat Helipad made a forced landing in the sea at Mayabunder.  Coincidentally, an engine dinghy of the Wildlife Division, Mayabunder, was proceeding towards Interview Island Protection Camp carrying essential stores and supplies. On board were Daily Rated Mazdoors (DRMs) of the Forest Department namely Saw Sakari, Saw Thomas, and Saw Manashe, along with police- personnel. During their transit, they witnessed the helicopter made forced landing into the sea.

Despite being at a short distance from the impact site, the team immediately followed emergency protocol by informing their Camp Officer about the incident. Upon receiving instructions to extend assistance, they promptly diverted their dinghy towards the site without hesitation. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind and bravery, they successfully evacuated all passengers, including an infant, from the forced landed helicopter.

The felicitation ceremony was organized to acknowledge and commend their outstanding service, dedication to duty, and exemplary display of courage in the face of an unforeseen emergency. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, A & N Islands felicitated the three DRMs at a function held in the Committee Room of Van Sadan, Haddo.
