AH&VS Implements Cattle and Buffalo Breeding & Improvement Programme in the Islands

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 4: Cattle and Buffalo breeding & improvement Programme is implemented by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, to boost up milk production and sustainable development in these Islands. Artificial Insemination through frozen semen and Sex Sorted Semen is carried out to improve the genetic quality of Cattle and frozen semen technique for Buffaloes. To improve the genetic quality of Buffalo population Artificial insemination using genetically proven Murrah semen is being promoted. Murrah Semen Straws have been made available in all the Artificial Insemination centres throughout the Islands. 

Murrah Buffaloes are known for their high milk production potential. Murrah buffaloes are adaptable to Island’s climatic condition and thrive well in diverse climates. They are known for their disease resistance and therefore cost-effective to rear. Opting Artificial Insemination using Murrah Semen, the farmers can get buffalo calves with increased milk production potential. The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, urges all the buffalo owners to avail the benefit for improving their herd productivity.
