Sri Vijaya Puram, March 1: In a moment of immense pride for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Ms. Amrita Minj has won the Gold Medal in CW 1X event at the 1st Beach Sprint National Rowing Championship held in Goa from 24th to 28th February.
The prestigious championship was organized by the Rowing and Sculling Association De Goa on behalf of the Rowing Federation of India, featuring top rowing athletes from across the country. Demonstrating extraordinary determination, skill, and resilience, Ms. Amrita Minj emerged victorious in her event and brought laurels to the Islands at the national level.
Notably, this Beach Sprint National Rowing Championship was conducted for the first time in the country, marking a historic beginning for this exciting and fast-growing format of rowing in India.
Her achievement is especially commendable as she secured the gold medal despite the absence of adequate rowing infrastructure and advanced training facilities in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Competing against athletes who have access to better resources and professional training environments, her success reflects sheer dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment.
Shri G. Bhasker, President of the Andaman & Nicobar Rowing Association, has congratulated Ms. Amrita Minj on her outstanding accomplishment. He also extended his appreciation and congratulations to the other rowers from the Islands who participated in various events at the championship and represented the Union Territory with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
He stated that this remarkable victory highlights the untapped sporting potential of the Islands and underscores the urgent need for strengthening rowing infrastructure and systematic training facilities locally to enable athletes to compete more effectively at national and international levels.
Shri G. Bhasker has further urged the Rowing Federation of India to consider conducting the next Beach Sprint National Rowing Championship in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which are blessed with excellent and scenic beaches ideally suited for beach sprint rowing events. Hosting such a national-level championship would not only promote water sports in the Islands but also boost sports tourism and provide greater exposure to local athletes.
