
Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 8: 7th of August is celebrated every year as National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement and to honour the contribution of handloom weavers in the socio-economic development of the country. As part of the nationwide celebrations, the A&N Islands Khadi and Village Industries Board organized a programme for the students of Tagore Govt. College of Education, Sri Vijaya Puram, yesterday, aimed at promoting handloom and instilling the ‘Khadi spirit’ among the youth, especially among the student community.
The Handloom Day celebration was graced by the presence of Smti. Manjulata Rao, Principal of TGCE, as the chief guest, and Smti. Sunita Kumari, Deputy Director of the Industries Department, as the guest of honour. The event was attended by 120 students from TGCE, who actively participated in the programme.
In her address, the chief guest, Smti. Manjulata Rao, emphasized the significance of promoting handloom among the youth of the Islands, highlighting its vital role as a cornerstone of rural livelihoods. She urged the students to champion the cause of handloom to support sustainable economic growth in rural communities.
Smti. Sunita Kumari engaged with the participants and underscored the cultural and historical importance of handloom, noting its contribution to India’s pride on the global stage. Her insights inspired the audience to appreciate the legacy and craftsmanship of handloom traditions.
The Executive Officer of ANI KVIB delivered a comprehensive address, elaborating on the significance of Handloom Day.
The programme featured an informative presentation on Handloom Day, detailing the production processes of handloom fabrics. Additionally, an exhibition showcased traditional skills and a diverse collection of Khadi fabrics and apparel, captivating the attendees. The event aimed to sensitize students to the profound value of handloom, not merely as a fabric but as a symbol of national pride, self-reliance, and sustainable living.
The programme successfully fostered awareness and appreciation among the participants, encouraging them to embrace and promote the rich heritage of handloom.
