Block Mela-cum-Tribal Food Festival Marks the 80th Independence Day Celebrations at Kamorta

Kamorta, Aug. 17: In a vibrant celebration of the nation’s 80th Independence Day, the picturesque Hockey Ground at Kamorta came alive with colour, energy and enthusiasm as a two-day Block Mela cum Tribal Food Festival unfolded on 15th and 16th August, 2026. Organized under the flagship Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) of the Government of India, the festival stood as a shining testament to grassroots empowerment, strengthening the bond between administration and citizens while giving vibrant expression to local culture, entrepreneurship, and social cohesion.

The inaugural function was graced by Shri Mohammed Yunus M, Block Development Officer, CD Block, Nancowry, as the Chief Guest, in the distinguished presence of Smt. Ayesha Majeed, Chief Tribal Captain – Nancowry, and Shri Charles Jacob, Chief Tribal Captain – Kamorta, along with Heads of Departments, tribal leaders, and a spirited gathering of villagers.

The Mela brought together a vibrant convergence of government departments, including AH&VS, Agriculture, Fisheries, Health, Rural Development, Social Welfare, SBI, and INS Kardip, each creating awareness on their respective schemes and services.

Among the standout attractions was the Tribal Food Festival, where SHGs proudly showcased a rich and colourful variety of Nicobarese cuisines. Infusing the festival with rhythm and dazzling energy, the much-awaited “Dance Nancowry Dance 2.0” and “Mr. and Ms. Nancowry” competitions set the stage ablaze with youthful spirit and cultural flair.

Events such as Tug of War (men’s and women’s categories), Coconut Grating, Musical Chair, and Pillow Fight drew enthusiastic participation from all age groups, rekindling cherished bonds of festivity and camaraderie. Smt. Ireena, Assistant Education Officer, Nancowry, welcomed the dignitaries and participants.
