Chatham Bridge Found to be in a Deteriorating Condition, DM South Andaman Imposes Restrictions

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 23: In exercise of the powers conferred under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (Act No. 59 of 1988), read with the Administration’s Notification No./2008/F.No.32-95/2008-TR dated 10th March, 2008, the District Magistrate, South Andaman has notified for the information of all concerned that the Chatham Bridge has been found to be in a deteriorating condition. The bridge serves as the only access connecting Chatham Island to the Headquarter area, and its structural integrity is of critical importance.

As a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and to prevent any further deterioration of the bridge, the following restrictions have been imposed on the movement of heavy vehicles over the Chatham Bridge with immediate effect:

•Heavy vehicle should be allowed to pass at a maximum speed of 30Km/h and carriage load limit of 20MT maximum including vehicles.

•Only one heavy loaded vehicle should be permitted to cross the bridge at a time.

These restrictions shall remain in force until the final structural assessment report is submitted by IIT Madras and further instructions are issued accordingly.

All concerned Departments, enforcement agencies, and transport operators have been directed to ensure strict compliance with this notification in the interest of public safety.
