CINCAN Leads Spectacular ‘Parade of Sails’ Marking the 80th Independence Day Celebrations at Sri Vijaya Puram

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 17: The 80th Independence Day was commemorated by the Andaman and Nicobar Command with a spectacular ‘Parade of Sails’ conducted on 15 August 2026 off the iconic Flag Point at Sri Vijaya Puram. The grand maritime spectacle was led by Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, AVSM, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), symbolising the Command’s strong maritime connect and the nation’s enduring patriotic spirit.

Setting sail in the early afternoon of 15 August 2026, CINCAN spearheaded a flotilla of sailboats from the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre and ANIDCO’s Andaman Nicobar Sailing Club, negotiating gusty winds and rough seas. The ceremonial parade featured a dynamic formation of sailboats and other watercraft, which manoeuvred in formation through the azure waters of the Andaman Sea. Each participating sailboat and watercraft proudly displayed the National Tricolour, creating a vibrant and stirring spectacle of patriotism against the expansive maritime horizon. One of the most heartwarming aspects of the event was the demonstration of sailing skills by young sailing enthusiasts in their small Optimist-class boats, determined to conquer the rough seas and strong winds.

The ‘Parade of Sails’ was meticulously choreographed off the historic Flag Point, against the backdrop of the largest National Flag in Sri Vijaya Puram, a landmark deeply associated with India’s freedom struggle.

The maritime setting was further enhanced by the presence of capital ships of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Directorate of Shipping Service (DSS) anchored in the vicinity. In accordance with naval tradition, the ships were ‘Dressed Overall’ with colourful signal flags and the National Tricolour, creating a magnificent maritime tableau.

The spectacular maritime parade brought together traditional seamanship, sailing skills and patriotic fervour, reflecting the Andaman and Nicobar Command’s deep connection with the seas and its unwavering commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests and sovereignty.

The unique spectacle at Sri Vijaya Puram offered a memorable and stirring tribute to the nation on its 80th Independence Day, leaving an indelible impression on spectators and showcasing a distinctive maritime celebration of India’s freedom, pride and spirit of service.
