CITU Observes its Foundation Day by Organising Seminar on ‘Trade Union Rights’

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 30: CITU Andaman & Nicobar State Committee observed the CITU Foundation Day today (30.05.2025) by organizing a Seminar on “Trade Union Rights” at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali.   D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee, who presided over the Seminar, briefly explained the trade union movement in the country since 1921 and the formation of the CITU in May, 1970. He said that it is the CITU which has been fighting the anti-working-class policies of the governments in the country especially after the introduction of new economic policies by the Congress government in 1991. Referring to the joint struggles being conducted by all the central trade unions in the country, except the BMS, against new Labour Codes and other anti-working-class policies, he said that lakhs of workers and employees working in different sectors like Banking, insurance, government employees, etc are participating in these movements throughout the country.   He said that CITU in Andaman & Nicobar Islands is undertaking wider campaign on various issues pertaining to the workers which will culminate in the All India Strike on 9th July, 2025. 

Addressing the Seminar, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU State Committee said that it is the CITU and unions affiliated to it have been conducting agitations during the last more than four decades taking up various demands of workers in government and private sectors in these islands.  Referring to the grant of 1/30th of pay plus DA to the daily rated employees, Chandrachoodan said that it was due to the three decades of struggle by CITU from the early 1990s that more than nine thousand daily rated workers working in various departments of the A & N Administration have been benefitted. He stressed the need to strengthen the CITU and its affiliated unions to carry forward this struggle.      

Anand Rajan, Secretary, CITU State Committee also addressed the Seminar.
