Mayabunder, Oct. 19: Shri Sushant Padha, Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman District, convened a meeting with the elected representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Heads of Departments (HoDs) to review preparedness and strengthen measures for the prevention, containment and control of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the district.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among all concerned departments, PRIs and local communities to prevent the spread of the disease. He directed the concerned departments to maintain strict surveillance, promptly report suspected cases and ensure effective implementation of the prescribed preventive measures.
The Veterinary Department was directed to intensify awareness activities among pig farmers and the general public regarding the symptoms of African Swine Fever, modes of transmission and the precautions required to prevent its spread. Special emphasis was laid on discouraging the movement of pigs and pork products from affected areas without due authorisation and on ensuring strict compliance with the guidelines issued by the competent authorities.

Heads of Departments were instructed to extend all necessary assistance and ensure close coordination with the designated district-level authorities.
He further stressed that any suspected case must be reported immediately to the Veterinary Department and that appropriate biosecurity, sanitation and containment measures must be followed to minimise the risk of further transmission.
The meeting underscored the importance of collective responsibility, timely information-sharing and community participation in safeguarding livestock and protecting the livelihoods of pig farmers in North & Middle Andaman District.
The District Administration appealed to all pig farmers, livestock owners and members of the public to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and cooperate with the concerned departments in the collective effort to contain African Swine Fever.
