The initiative aimed to strengthen early detection and treatment of tuberculosis in remote island communities.

A dedicated medical team comprising Dr. M.A. Tanzeer (Medical Officer, CHC Nancowry), Dr. Priyanka Samuel (Medical Officer, PHC Teressa) and others conducted Active Case Finding (ACF) at Chowra Island from 6th to 10th August, 2025. The exercise covered the Island’s total population of 1,537, screening 421 vulnerable individuals and collecting 45 CBNAAT samples for TB testing.

Alongside screening, awareness sessions were organised to educate the community on TB prevention, early diagnosis and the importance of completing treatment. The Tribal Secretary and Village Headman actively supported the campaign by motivating residents to participate. Sick and bed-ridden patients were identified, provided with medical care and assured of regular follow-up.

A special health camp was organised on 9th August, 2025 at the Health & Wellness Center, Chowra. During the camp, updated medicines were distributed, general health check-ups were conducted and treatments were prescribed as necessary. This coordinated effort marks a significant step towards achieving the vision of a TB-free Nicobar through community participation, early intervention and dedicated health services.
