Directorate of Transport to Implement Phase II of ‘Integrated Road Safety Awareness & Transport Service Outreach Programme’

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 15: The Directorate of Transport, A&N Administration, in its capacity as the Lead Agency on Road Safety in the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, is organizing the “Integrated Road Safety Awareness & Transport Service Outreach Programme (Phase – II)” across various Panchayats, rural localities and Higher Educational Institutions of the Islands from May to September 2026.

The programme is being conducted as part of the ongoing Road Safety Awareness Initiatives of the Transport Department with the objective of promoting road safety awareness, encouraging responsible road usage and ensuring doorstep delivery of transport-related citizen services to the public, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The first phase of the programme, conducted during June to October 2025, received encouraging public response and achieved substantial outreach in the field of road safety awareness and decentralized delivery of transport services. Building upon the positive outcomes of the first phase, Phase – II is being implemented on an expanded scale across South Andaman, Little Andaman, North & Middle Andaman and Nicobar District.

The programme shall cover awareness activities relating to:

• Importance of helmet and seatbelt usage,

• Dangers associated with over-speeding and drunken driving,

• Responsible road usage and traffic discipline,

• Pedestrian safety,

• Emergency response and trauma care awareness and

• Compliance with provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and Road Safety Regulations.

The awareness sessions shall be conducted with active participation of officials from the Transport Department, Police Department and Health Department. Live demonstrations on basic trauma care and first aid techniques shall also be conducted during the camps.

In addition to awareness activities, various citizen-centric transport services shall also be facilitated on-site during the camps, including:

• Learner’s License facilitation

• On-the-spot Medical Examination for Learner’s License applicants

• Conduct of Learner’s License Tests

• Renewal of Driving Licenses

• Collection of Road Tax

• Renewal of Registration Certificates

• Permit-related services

• Vehicle-related facilitation services and

• Public grievance redressal and transport facilitation services

As part of the outreach initiative, the programme shall also be conducted all the Higher Educational Institutions across the UT of A & N Islands.

Eligible students and staff members shall also be facilitated for Learner’s License Tests and related transport services during the respective institutional camps.

The Transport Department appeals to all Gram Panchayats, PRI members, educational institutions, vehicle owners, drivers, students and members of the general public to actively participate in the programme and extend cooperation towards strengthening road safety awareness and promoting responsible driving practices in the Islands.
