Mayabunder, Sept. 28: On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2026 and as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign, a comprehensive district-wide cleanliness drive was organised across North & Middle Andaman District with the objective of promoting cleanliness, environmental responsibility and community participation.
The drive was conducted simultaneously at 26 different locations across the district, covering beaches, coastal stretches, Jarawa Protection Posts and Police Outposts. Special emphasis was laid on maintaining the pristine character of the coastal and natural landscapes of the Islands, which attract visitors for their scenic beauty, rich biodiversity and unique ecological environment.
At Baludera Beach, Mayabunder, Shri Sushant Padha, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman, participated in the cleanliness drive along with officers and staff of various line departments, the Forest Department, APWD, school students, the Pradhan of Pokkadera, and members of the local community. The participation of officials, students and local residents reflected a strong spirit of collective ownership towards maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces and natural surroundings.
During the programme, the Deputy Commissioner appreciated the enthusiastic participation of all stakeholders and highlighted that cleanliness should not remain confined to occasional campaigns or designated public places. He emphasised that cleanliness must become a way of life and a shared responsibility, extending from beaches and tourist destinations to homes, villages, institutions, workplaces and other community spaces.
The participation of school students was particularly significant in spreading awareness about responsible waste disposal and environmental conservation among the younger generation. Their involvement is expected to help inculcate a sense of civic responsibility and environmental stewardship from an early age.
The district-wide campaign also provided an opportunity to sensitise local communities and visitors about the importance of keeping beaches and coastal areas free from litter, particularly plastic and other waste that can adversely affect marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
