Garhwal Rifles Honours Capt. CN Singh, MVC at Dharamshala; Family Presents Medals in Presence of CINCAN

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 7: On 05 August 1965, during the Indo-Pak War, Captain Chander Narain Singh, a valiant young officer of 2nd Battalion, The Garhwal Rifles, made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while fighting the Pakistani infiltrators. For his exceptional courage and devotion to the Nation, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest gallantry award.

On the solemn occasion of the 60th anniversary of his martyrdom, a military ceremony was held at Dharamshala on 05 August 2025. During the ceremony, Shri Sukhdev Singh, brother of Late Capt. Chander Narain Singh, presented Maha Vir Chakra and other medals of the gallant officer to The Garhwal Rifles Regiment.

The medals were received by Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, Ph.D., Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), who is also the Colonel of The Garhwal Rifles and Garhwal Scouts. The ceremony was also attended by Lieutenant General Rajan Sharawat, AVSM, VSM, GOC 9 Corps, Brigadier Vinod Singh Negi, VSM, Commandant, The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, Colonel Vishal Kumar Singh, Commanding Officer, 2 Garhwal Rifles, esteemed veterans, serving officers, and troops of the Regiment.

In his address, Lt Gen DS Rana expressed his heartfelt tribute to the family of Capt CN Singh for presenting the medals and alluded that Capt CN Singh, MVC was a true embodiment of courage, leadership and bravery and his legend will continue to inspire generations of Indian youth and future soldiers.

The medals will be displayed at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre Museum in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, serving as a source of inspiration and a proud reminder of the Regiment’s gallant heritage.

Such noble gestures by families of fallen heroes are deeply valued and must be emulated, as they ensure that the legacy of supreme sacrifice remains etched in the collective memory of the Nation.
