Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 7: The Police Marine Force (PMF) of Andaman & Nicobar Police, a specialised maritime policing unit entrusted with coastal security, sea patrolling, surveillance, and protection of the maritime interests of the Union Territory, has achieved a significant organisational milestone during the year 2025.
The PMF traces its origin to a modest Police Coast Guard raised in 1957. Over the decades, it has evolved into a professionally equipped and strategically vital force, playing a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers in the Bay of Bengal against intrusions, poaching, smuggling, and other transnational maritime threats.
In a historic first since the raising of the PMF Unit, promotions to officer ranks have been granted from within the unit, marking a defining moment in its institutional growth and maturity. As part of this landmark promotion exercise, four (04) Head Constables have been promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector, constituting the maiden promotions to the Sub-Inspector rank in the Police Marine Force. The details are as follows:
• Three (03) Head Constables (Seacunny) have been promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector (Master).
• One (01) Head Constable (Greaser) has been promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector (Engine Driver).
Further strengthening the supervisory and leadership cadre of the unit, one (01) Sub-Inspector (Master) has also been promoted to the rank of Inspector (Master).
All promotions have been carried out strictly in accordance with the notified Recruitment Rules, following due procedure through the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC), and with the approval of the competent authority.
The Police Marine Force plays a pivotal role in maritime security, coastal and island surveillance, anti-smuggling operations, search and rescue missions, disaster response, and prevention of illegal activities within the territorial waters of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The elevation of experienced and technically qualified personnel to higher ranks is expected to significantly enhance the command, control, and overall operational effectiveness of the Force.
The Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, along with senior officers of the department, have congratulated the promoted personnel and conveyed their best wishes, expressing confidence that they will discharge their enhanced responsibilities with greater dedication, professionalism, integrity, and commitment to public service.
This promotion exercise during the year 2025 stands as a landmark achievement in the organisational development of the Police Marine Force and reflects the department’s sustained commitment to career progression, personnel motivation, and capacity building.
