
Diglipur, Dec. 5: ICAR–KVK, North & Middle Andaman, organized a special program on World Soil Day, 2025 at PM Shri Senior Secondary School, Swadeshnagar on 5th December. This year’s global theme, “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities”, was highlighted throughout the event, underscoring the vital role of soil in sustaining both rural and urban ecosystems.
Er. Manoj Kumar, SMS (Agricultural Engineering), delivered an insightful talk on soil formation processes and the importance of soil conservation management. He explained how natural factors such as weathering, organic matter, and climate contribute to soil development, and emphasized the need for conservation practices like contour farming, mulching, and afforestation to prevent erosion. He further encouraged the adoption of sustainable farming methods, advocating for organic practices to preserve soil fertility and reduce chemical inputs. His message urged students to recognize soil as a living resource and to contribute actively to its protection.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yatharth Sharma, SMS (Home Science), engaged participants in an interactive session on innovative approaches to prevent soil degradation. He stressed the importance of community involvement in combating erosion and pollution, linking these efforts to the broader theme of creating healthier, greener cities.
A special note of appreciation was extended to Vice Principal, Shri Saleem Kerketta of PM Shri Senior Secondary School for his support in facilitating the event and encouraging student involvement.
The program was organized under the overall guidance of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director (Act.) ICAR–CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram, and witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 56 students and faculty members.
The celebration reinforced the message that protecting soil health is essential not only for agriculture but also for building resilient, sustainable cities.
