ICAR_CIARI Conducts Awareness Programme on Efficient Use of Fertilizer for Soil Health at Chouldari

Chouldari, April 27: An awareness programme on the efficient use of fertilizers and soil health management was successfully conducted at Chouldari Panchayat in South Andaman District on 24 April 2026. The programme aimed to educate farmers on sustainable agricultural practices and promote eco-friendly approaches for improving soil productivity.

A total of 25 farmers participated in the programme. The session featured interactive discussions led by scientists from ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram.

Dr. P. K. Singh, Principal Scientist interacted with the farmers on the judicious use of fertilizers, emphasizing balanced nutrient application, maintenance of soil health, and the adoption of crop rotation practices to enhance long-term productivity. Dr. Pooja Bohra, Senior Scientist elaborated on the use of alternative organic inputs such as green manure and vermicompost, particularly in horticultural crops, highlighting their role in improving soil structure and fertility.

Mr. Chittaranjan Raul, Scientist explained the adverse impacts of fertilizer runoff on pond water quality, including nutrient enrichment and algal blooms, which can negatively affect aquatic ecosystems. Dr. Perumal P., Senior Scientist discussed the utilization of cattle waste for organic manure production and encouraged farmers to adopt integrated farming approaches for sustainable agriculture.

The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers clarified their doubts and shared field experiences. Overall, the awareness programme was effective in enhancing farmers’ knowledge of sustainable soil and nutrient management practices, contributing to environmentally sound agriculture in the region.
