New Delhi, May 27: Fisheries sector provides livelihood, employment, and entrepreneurship to more than 2.8 crore fishers and fish farmers at the primary level and several lakhs along the value chain. This sector has gradually evolved over the years to become an important pillar of socio-economic growth of the nation. Over the past 75 years the sector has transformed with a 22- fold increase in fish production. From a mere 7.5 lakh tons in 1950-51, India’s total fish production has reached a record 162.48 lakh tons per annum in 2021-22, with a 10.34% growth in fish production in 2021- 22 in comparison to 2020-21. Today, India is the 3rd largest fish producing country with about 8% share in global fish production. India stands 2nd in aquaculture production and one of the top cultured shrimps producing nation in the world.

Port Blair, May 28: The Member of Parliament, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma organized a special event this morning titled 'Yagna and Sarva Dharma Prayer' at 7 AM in Tiranga Park. The objective of this event was to unite the community in prayer, seeking divine intervention for much-needed rainfall in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. A large number of senior citizens and islanders attended the program, contributing to its success.

Port Blair, May 28: The Congress Campaign Committee Chairman, A&N Islands Mr. TSG Bhasker on Friday wrote a letter to the Hon'ble Lt. Governor requesting him to give necessary directions for issuance of OBC Certificates for the purpose of employment under A&N Administration.

In the letter, Mr. Bhasker highlighted that jobs are provided to the qualified youths on the basis of certain criteria laid down by Administration in which one of the criteria is submission of OBC Certificate.

Governor, A&N Islands & Vice Chairman, Islands Development Agency participated in Pooja ceremony by the Adheenam Mahants from Tamil Nadu followed by installing of the historic Sengol in New Parliament building by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Hon’ble Lt. Governor also attended the inauguration ceremony of the New Parliament building by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.

Port Blair, May 28: On the auspicious occasion of World Dugong Day, 28th May 2023, the Islanders proudly celebrated the dugong day at the Flag Point in Port Blair. The program was jointly conducted by the CAMPA Dugong team of the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the Andaman & Nicobar Forest Department.

The event created awareness about dugongs (the state animal of Andaman & Nicobar Islands) among the audience and tourists present. Shri. Kamal Datta, IFS, Additional PCCF, Smt. S. Selvi, Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council, Shri. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Territorial Division, Shri. Sanjay Waradkar, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Division), Shri. Sandeep Behera, IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Dr. Ramesh C (Scientist, WII) and Dr. Nehru Prabakaran (Scientist, WII) graced the occasion.
