Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 14: The Andaman & Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), Department of Science and Technology has initiated action for effective implementation of the Battery Waste Management (BWM) Rules, 2022 in compliance with the directions issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) regarding EPR credit generation.
Pursuant to decisions made during the 4th Implementation Committee Meeting under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, it has been observed that Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credit generation is currently permitted for recyclers producing both Re-Melted Lead (RML) and Re-refined Lead (RRL). However, RML is an intermediate product, which requires further refining to obtain RRL which is the battery-grade lead suitable for manufacturing of new lead acid batteries.
Thus, a one-year transition period has been provided to the LAB recyclers to upgrade their plants to produce RRL. After the completion of the transitional period, EPR credit generation shall be discontinued for the production of RML and available only for the production of RRL.
In order to ensure compliance of the above mandate, ANPCC invites the general public to furnish information on the existence of LAB recyclers operating in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands to the Member Secretary, ANPCC, Department of Science and Technology, A&N Administration, Dollygunj, Sri Vijaya Puram, South Andaman on or before 20-08-2026.
