Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 27: On the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai, yesterday unfurled the National Flag at Viper Island in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, marking a significant moment of national pride and unity.
In line with the vision and directives of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi to strengthen coastal security, and under the able guidance of Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has been consistently undertaking a special campaign over the past few years to hoist the National Flag on all 836 islands of the archipelago on occasions of national importance such as Independence Day and Republic Day.
The occasion was also graced by the Hon’ble Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS and other senior officers of A&N Administration.
Viper Island holds a significant place in India’s freedom struggle, as it was one of the earliest sites used by the British colonial administration to incarcerate Indian freedom fighters before the construction of the Cellular Jail. The island bears testimony to the immense sacrifices, hardships, and resilience of those who fought for India’s independence under extremely harsh conditions. Unfurling the National Flag at this historic location serves as a solemn tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the nation.
The unfurling of the National Flag on Viper Island also symbolizes India’s unwavering sovereignty, maritime security, and firm commitment to safeguarding its maritime borders.
