
Rangat, May 26: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the North & Middle Andaman District Police, in coordination with the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA), successfully conducted the SP Cup Open Chess Tournament on 25/05/2025 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium, Rangat. The event aimed to promote cognitive development, discipline, and sportsmanship among the younger generation while strengthening community-police relations.
The tournament witnessed an overwhelming response, with 81 participants from the islands participating in seven rounds of intense and competitive chess matches. The participants from different age groups, showcased remarkable skill, strategy, and focus throughout the tournament.
The valedictory ceremony was held in the presence of Ms. Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, Superintendent of Police (District), N&MA, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In her address, she emphasized the importance of such platforms in nurturing young minds and instilling values of concentration, patience, and critical thinking. She also highlighted the role of the police in supporting youth-centric initiatives and building trust through positive engagement.
The tournament was also attended by Shri Vikas Kumar, DANICS, Assistant Commissioner, Rangat, who was present as the Guest of Honour, and Shri Rajnikant Awadiya, DANIPS, SDPO Rangat. SI Benedict, I/c PS Rangat & SI Abdul Sajeed were instrumental in organizing the event at the local level. The dignitaries interacted with the participants, encouraging them to pursue their talents with dedication and integrity.
After a rigorous day of matches, 40-year-old Sanjay Kumar R/o Mayabunder, emerged as the overall winner of the tournament and 13-year-old Sachit Bara R/o Sri Vijaya Puram emerged as the runner up. Other top performers were also recognized across various categories. The Chief Guest distributed trophies and certificates to the winners and participants, applauding their efforts and sportsmanship.
The event not only provided a platform for young chess enthusiasts but also reinforced the commitment of N&MA Police to fostering community development through constructive and educational engagements.
