Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 22: In a proactive initiative to promote water conservation and responsible usage of drinking water, the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) organized an awareness rally today under the leadership of its Chief Engineer, Shri T. K. Prijith Rekh.
The rally was flagged off by the Chief Engineer from the Chief Engineer’s Office Complex during the morning hours. The primary objective of the rally was to sensitize the local populace about the judicious use of drinking water supplied by APWD and the SVPMC, particularly in view of the prevailing water availability.
Addressing the participants prior to the flagging-off ceremony, Shri T. K. Prijith Rekh highlighted the significant deficiency in the North-East monsoon and its impact on water availability and supply distribution across the region. He emphasized that the shortfall in rainfall has placed added stress on existing water resources, making conservation efforts more critical.
The Chief Engineer urged the participants to act as ambassadors of awareness and actively educate consumers on minimizing water wastage through mindful and efficient usage. He stressed the importance of using water judiciously for various daily activities such as drinking, cooking, flushing, bathing, and other household needs. He further informed that the prescribed minimum norms for drinking water supply range between 55 to 100 litres per capita per day (LPCD), depending on whether the area is rural or urban.
Shri Rekh also encouraged citizens to adopt the practice of self-water audits to identify and reduce unnecessary consumption and wastage of water at the household level. He reiterated that collective responsibility and behavioural change are essential to ensure sustainable water availability for the future.
Concluding his address, the Chief Engineer expressed his sincere appreciation to all participants for their enthusiastic involvement and support in making the rally a success and for contributing to this noble cause of water conservation.
A similar awareness rally was organized yesterday in the Bathubasti area under the Executive Engineer, PHED, as part of APWD’s continued efforts to spread awareness on the judicious use of drinking water across different localities.
