Sri Vijaya Puram, July 8: It is a proud moment for the islands, as R. Kashthuri Bhai, a young chess prodigy from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands has become the first player from the islands to be awarded an official FIDE player title, earning the distinction of Woman Candidate Master (WCM). The title was conferred on her this morning by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
In a remarkable milestone, she has also become the first female player from the islands to cross the 2000 FIDE rating mark, a rare and commendable accomplishment for any young player. These twin achievements were secured during the 21st Delhi International Open 2025, a major FIDE-rated event held last month in New Delhi.
For a region with limited exposure to national competition and infrastructure, this moment represents more than just a personal triumph — it’s a breakthrough for chess in the islands. It reflects the growing potential of our young talents and the strength of their spirit in overcoming geographical and resource challenges.
ANCA congratulates WCM R. Kashthuri Bhai on this historic feat and takes immense pride in supporting her continued journey toward the coveted Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title, a goal she is clearly on track to achieve in the near future.
This landmark moment stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for hundreds of young chess players across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
