Juvenile Justice Committee Organises Programme to Eliminate Persistent Gaps that Threaten Effective Implementation of POCSO Act, 2012

Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov. 6: The Juvenile Justice Committee, High Court at Calcutta, organized a programme on ‘Strengthening the Role of Investigation, Prosecution and Judiciary, particularly in POCSO Cases’ on Nov. 4 in the Court Hall of Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court at Port Blair.
The Hon’ble Justice Shampa Sarkar, Judge, High Court at Calcutta and Hon’ble Chairperson, Juvenile Justice Committee (JJC) set the tone of the discussion. The Hon’ble Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay, Judge, High Court at Calcutta graced the occasion.
The primary objective for organizing this programme was to make a concerted effort to eliminate the persistent gaps that threaten the effective implementation of the POCSO Act, 2012 and find ways to obliterate them. Effort was to instil collective responsibility and coordination among the Judiciary, the Prosecution, the Investigating Agencies, the Administration, as well as citizens, professionals, and Government instrumentalities. The programme emphasized the crucial role each stakeholder plays in ensuring justice for victims and holding perpetrators accountable under the law.
During the sessions, Mr. Neyaz Alam, Special Judge, POCSO, Ms. Niharikha Bhatt, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Shri Ravinder Kumar, Director, Social Welfare, A&N Administration, Mr. Deep Chaim Kabir, Senior Advocate, Mr. D. Ilango, Advocate, and Dr. M. Ashwini Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine, ANIIMS spoke on the occasion and shared their valuable insights on combating the issue.
A panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Deep Chaim Kabir, Senior Advocate, with assistance from panellists namely Mr. Samrat Roy, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr. Jayanto Mukherjee, Judge, JJB, Ms. A. S. Zinu, Special Public Prosecutor (POCSO), Ms. Tasneem, Special Public Prosecutor (POCSO), and Dr. Kushal Baidya, Assistant Professor (Psychiatry), ANIIMS, who addressed the questions raised by the stakeholders.
The programme was hosted by Mr. Rashid Alam, Registrar, Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court, who delivered the welcome address and concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
