
Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 4: The Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Andaman & Nicobar UT Branch, conducted a Two-Day State-Level Workshop on “Respectful Maternity Care” from 1st to 2nd September 2025 at the AYUSH Conference Hall, Sri Vijaya Puram, with the approval of the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council (TNNMC).
The Inaugural Function was graced by Dr. Suja Antony, Director of Health Services, A&N Administration, as the Chief Guest, who highlighted the vital role nurses play in delivering respectful, dignified care to mothers during childbirth. The event was further honored by the presence of esteemed guests S Sreenivason Secretary TNAI Andaman & Nicobar UT Branch, Dr. Siddha Raju, Dr. Jeevana Chinata and Dr. Manabika Dutta who shared valuable insights on the current challenges in maternal health and the importance of holistic, women-centered care.
The workshop commenced with thought-provoking lectures delivered by a panel of experienced healthcare professionals and educators from the nursing and health fraternity. The sessions blended theoretical frameworks with practical strategies to enhance respectful maternity care practices.
Over the course of two days, participants engaged in a range of technical and interactive sessions focused on:
Understanding Respectful Maternity Care (RMC): Principles, global standards, and its impact on maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
Legal and Ethical Aspects of Maternity Care: Emphasizing consent, patient privacy, and rights-based care approaches.
Communication and Empathy in Labor Rooms: Using role plays and case studies to promote compassionate, patient-centered care.
Managing Obstetric Emergencies with Respect: Balancing clinical competence with dignified care during critical situations.
Role of Nurses as Advocates for Women-Centered Care: Encouraging leadership and advocacy among nursing professionals.
The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony in which Mrs. Anney Thomas, President, TNAI A&N UT Branch, honoured the resource persons with mementos and distributed certificates of participation to all attendees.
This impactful workshop was attended by 30 nursing professionals, including Nursing Officers, Community Health Officers (CHOs), Public Health Nurses (PHNs), and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) from across the Union Territory. The participants expressed a renewed commitment to promoting and practicing respectful, rights-based maternity care within their respective healthcare facilities.
