Tourism Department in Association with ANET Organises Lecture on Turtle Nesting by Dr. Kartik Shanker

Sri Vijaya Puram June 15: The Department of Tourism, Andaman & Nicobar Administration in association with Andaman and Nicobar Environment Team (ANET) today organized an enlightening lecture titled ‘From Hatchling to Hope: Leveraging Turtle Nesting for Sustainable Tourism in the Islands’ by renowned Marine Biologist, Prof. Dr. Kartik Shanker of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

The session explored the ecological and tourism potential of turtle nesting sites across the Islands, highlighting how conservation efforts can be harmoniously integrated with tourism initiatives to create meaningful and sustainable experiences. Prof. Shanker elaborated on the life cycle of sea turtles, the critical nesting habitats found in the Islands, and the global success stories of eco-tourism that protect wildlife while supporting local livelihoods.

Earlier, the Secretary (Tourism), Ms Jyoti Kumari, IAS addressed the gathering, emphasizing the Department’s renewed focus on off-season and alternative tourism strategies. She stated that the lecture series are knowledge-driven events and sustainable activities on the potential of niche segments of tourism being undertaken with a vision to transform tourism offerings in the Islands beyond the traditional peak seasons. “These initiatives aim to establish clear deliverables that can be translated into tangible, measurable outcomes”.

The event drew the participation of tourism stakeholders, local entrepreneurs, students and nature enthusiasts, reinforcing a shared commitment to preserving the Islands’ unique biodiversity while nurturing eco-conscious tourism.

The Department of Tourism reaffirms its commitment to balancing ecological integrity with tourism development, aligning with the broader vision of making Andaman & Nicobar Islands a model destination for sustainable and responsible travel.
