Sri Vijaya Puram, July 26: As part of its ongoing initiative to promote niche tourism segments and enhance visitor engagement during the off-season, the Department of Tourism, Andaman & Nicobar Administration in association with the Avians Club Andaman and Nicobar Islands organized a special lecture today on “Bird Watching in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands” by Shri Arun Singh, President of the Avians Club.
The insightful session highlighted the exceptional biodiversity of the islands, which serve as a haven for over 300 species of birds, including many rare and endemic varieties such as the Andaman Woodpecker, Nicobar Megapode, and Andaman Crake. Shri Singh emphasized that bird watching holds immense potential as a sustainable and experience-driven form of tourism that aligns with the principles of ecotourism.
The lecture also underlined how promoting bird watching during the monsoon and shoulder seasons can help balance tourist flows, engage nature enthusiasts, and generate local employment through guided tours and homestay experiences. The Department aims to integrate such niche offerings into the larger tourism strategy, encouraging responsible travel while showcasing the islands’ natural heritage.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from nature lovers, tour operators, students, and eco-guides, reflecting growing interest in ecotourism-based experiences in the islands.
