Tourism Department to Organise Lecture on Heritage Tourism

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 8: As part of its ongoing initiative to promote tourism during the off-season and highlight the rich historical legacy of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Tourism Department will be organizing a Public Lecture on Heritage Tourism titled ‘Echoes of the Past, Colonial Footprints: Cellular Jail and the Freedom Struggle – A Living Memory’ on Aug. 9 at 11 AM in the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Disaster Management. The lecture will be delivered by noted historian and author Dr. Rashida Iqbal. Dr. Rashida Iqbal, known for her extensive research and publications on India’s freedom struggle and the heritage significance of the A&N Islands, will take participants through the evocative history of the Cellular Jail – a symbol of colonial oppression and the enduring spirit of India’s independence movement.

The event aims to create awareness and appreciation of heritage tourism, connecting the past with the present for both residents and visitors. Students, historians, researchers, tourists, and members of the public have been invited to attend this knowledge-sharing session and gain fresh insights into one of India’s most significant historical landmarks.
