Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 2: As part of the Tourism Fairs, Festivals and Events 2026-27, the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism, A&N Administration, in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Forests, successfully organised a Rainforest Birding Trail at Biological Park, Chidiyatapu today. The programme witnessed an enthusiastic response from birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, students, photographers, travel professionals and members of the public, who participated in the morning trail to experience the Islands’ rich avian diversity and pristine rainforest ecosystem.
Conducted under the guidance of experienced birding experts and resource persons, the trail provided participants with an opportunity to observe several bird species in their natural habitat while learning about the unique biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Deputy Director, Biological Park, Chidiyatapu, Ms. Meera Nambiar briefed the participants about the Biological Park. After the briefing the participants were divided into two groups and taken on nature trails inside the park for a bird watching session by Shri Ram Vikas Forest Guard alongwith Forest Ranger, Shri Pramod Singh and Shri Reuben Paul, Member of the Avian Club. They shared valuable insights into endemic and migratory birds, their ecological significance, habitat conservation and the importance of protecting the Islands’ fragile rainforest ecosystems. During the trail, the participants observed approximately 20 species of birds.
The eco-tourism initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from 54 nature enthusiasts, including students, bird watchers and tourism stakeholders such as the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO), Andaman Nicobar Tour Operators Association (ANTOA) and members of the Avians Club. The overwhelming response reflected the growing interest in nature-based tourism and biodiversity conservation across the Islands.
The programme highlighted birdwatching as a sustainable eco-tourism activity that not only promotes responsible nature-based tourism but also encourages environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation. Participants expressed keen interest throughout the trail, actively interacting with the experts, identifying bird species and appreciating the remarkable natural heritage of the Islands.
The Rainforest Birding Trail forms part of the Administration’s continued efforts to promote responsible and sustainable eco-tourism while creating greater awareness about the unparalleled natural wealth of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Such initiatives also provide a valuable platform for fostering collaboration among government departments, tourism stakeholders, educational institutions, and the local community in preserving the Islands’ unique ecosystems.
