
Sri Vijaya Puram, March 1: Zoological Survey of India, Andaman & Nicobar Regional Centre successfully conducted the two-day workshop on “Science and Technology for a Greener Future”. The valedictory function held on 28 February 2026 at the ZSI Auditorium. The workshop was conducted as part of the celebrations of National Science Day.
Dr. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Department of Environment and Forests, A & N Islands was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function; besides Dr. M. Sanjappa, Former Director, Botanical Survey of India, MoEF&CC, Government of India, Dr. Rahul Mohan, Scientist-G, Department of Polar Sciences, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, Dr. K. Thiyagesan, Former Principal, AVC College (Autonomous), Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu was the special guests.
The programme included eight expert lectures along with sessions focused on skill development and capacity building. Total of 76 participants attended the workshop, including students and teachers from various schools and colleges, such as Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Kamaraj English Medium School, Sagritara School, Tagore Government College of Education, Andaman College, Andaman Law College, and Pondicherry University, besides trainees of the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP).
Dr. Dinesh Kannan, in his address highlighted the significance of workshops as platforms for sharing knowledge, generating awareness and stimulating new perspectives among participants. He noted that the primary objective of such programmes is not merely to provide answers but to encourage participants to think critically and develop a deeper interest in scientific and environmental issues. He emphasized that the true success of a workshop lies in transforming the way participants observe and understand the world around them. Such exposure helps develop curiosity and motivates individuals to explore topics related to biodiversity, environment and global issues such as polar research and climate change.
Dr. M. Sanjappa, addressed the gathering and shared valuable insights on the importance of plant diversity and its role in ensuring a sustainable future. He noted that the sessions conducted during the workshop had provided participants with a glimpse into the rich and diverse flora of the country and helped enhance their understanding of plant diversity.
Dr. Rahul Mohan, delivered an insightful address emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship and scientific curiosity. He highlighted that Earth is a unique and irreplaceable planet and urged participants to adopt sustainable practices to keep the planet green. Stressing that curiosity is the essence of learning, he encouraged students and young researchers from all disciplines to ask questions, explore new ideas, and contribute to solutions that improve daily life and environmental sustainability.
Dr. K. Thiyagesan in his address appreciated the organizers for conducting the programme and congratulated the participants for their active involvement. He noted that the workshop provided valuable insights through lectures delivered by eminent experts, covering various aspects of science and technology and their role in promoting a greener future.
Dr. C. Sivaperuman, Scientist-F / Officer-in-Charge, Zoological Survey of India, Andaman & Nicobar Regional Centre, A & N Islands welcomed the dignitaries, speakers, and participants to the valedictory session of the two-day workshop organized as part of the National Science Day 2026 celebrations. He informed that the workshop, conducted over the last two days, featured eight expert lectures delivered by eminent scientists and academicians on diverse themes related to science and technology for a sustainable and greener future. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the distinguished speakers for readily accepting the invitation and sharing their valuable knowledge and experience. At the conclusion, the chief guests and special guests distributed the certificates to the participants.
