Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar Relinquishes Command as Commander-In-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 25: Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, PVSM, AVSM, NM handed over command of Andaman and Nicobar Command on 25 May 2026, following a distinguished tenure marked by notable achievements in operational readiness, force modernisation, jointmanship and civil-military outreach across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He now proceeds to assume the prestigious appointment of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

During his tenure, ANC strengthened integration and force capability under India’s only operational Tri-Service Command. His focus on joint operations, integrated logistics, communication and synergy among the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard substantially enhanced combat preparedness, interoperability and mission effectiveness.

Under his leadership, ANC maintained a high operational tempo and robust maritime vigilance across its Area of Responsibility. Focused operations against illegal poaching by foreign nationals resulted in the apprehension of 64 poachers since 01 October 2025, including six poachers apprehended during Operation Castle Bay, a prolonged and gruelling six-day anti-poaching operation, demonstrating ANC’s sustained operational vigilance and commitment towards safeguarding India’s maritime interests and marine resources. ANC also successfully monitored and escorted 12 boats carrying approximately 1400 Rohingyas outside the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone, reaffirming its commitment towards maritime security and national interests.

ANC further ensured realistic joint training through Exercise Dweep Shakti 25, strengthening Tri-Service operational integration and combat preparedness. The Command enhanced maritime cooperation and diplomatic engagement through Coordinated Patrols (CORPATs) and engagements with friendly foreign navies. Personnel of ANC also participated in the multinational HADR Exercise Cobra Gold 26 in Thailand, facilitated Joint Exercises with the Royal Thai Air Force and played a significant humanitarian role during Operation Sagar Bandhu in Sri Lanka, including trans-shipment of over 300 tonnes of relief material, reaffirming India’s commitment towards regional cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

The Command also accorded significant thrust towards capability enhancement and infrastructure development across the islands. Infrastructure enhancement initiatives, including runway upgradation at Air Force Station Carnic and INS Utkrosh, further strengthened operational reach, force sustainment capability and operational readiness.

CINCAN also played a vital role in strengthening civil-military liaison and humanitarian outreach. Under his command, 53 Inter Island Communication Service flights facilitated civilian movement across remote islands. Numerous casualty evacuation missions and specialised medical camps were undertaken, benefitting over 950 local residents and improving accessibility to critical medical support.

The CINCAN extended heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Union Territory Administration for their unwavering support and cooperation, which enabled smooth execution of operational responsibilities and administrative initiatives.

On relinquishing command, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, PVSM, AVSM, NM affirmed that the Andaman and Nicobar Command remains well prepared to address emerging security challenges and further strengthen its role as India’s only operational Tri-Service Command. He expressed confidence that the foundations laid towards enhanced jointness, capability development and operational excellence would continue to grow stronger under future leadership.

He extended his deepest appreciation to all ranks of ANC, civil authorities and stakeholders for their unwavering support, professionalism and dedication during his tenure. As he proceeds to assume the appointment of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he reaffirmed his commitment towards strengthening the combat capability, integration and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.

To mark the conclusion of his command, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, PVSM, AVSM, NM reviewed a ceremonial Joint Services Guard of Honour at INS Utkrosh on     25 May 2026.

His visionary leadership, operational acumen and unwavering commitment to national service have strengthened the operational capability and strategic posture of the Andaman and Nicobar Command.
