
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 3: As a part of the celebration of World Environment Day 2026, the Zoological Survey of India Andaman & Nicobar Regional Centre and EIACP Centre on Island Biodiversity organized a series of environmental awareness activities, including an Environmental Awareness Rally and a Beach Cleanup Drive.
The Environmental Awareness Rally took place on June 3, 2026, starting from Cellular Jail and ending at the Zoological Survey of India. Dr. S. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Department of Environment and Forests, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, kicked off the rally. Scientists, research scholars, JNRM students, forest officials, and members of AATO were among the 62 passionate participants in the demonstration. The participants carried signs with messages on urgent environmental issues such sustainable living, biodiversity preservation, plastic pollution, and mitigating climate change. The demonstration was a successful means of raising awareness and promoting shared accountability for environmental preservation.
Officer-in-Charge Dr. C. Sivaperuman welcomed everyone to the rally and emphasised the institution’s important contributions to biodiversity protection, research, and documentation in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In order to protect the rich and delicate island ecosystems, he underlined the significance of cooperative efforts between government agencies, researchers, academic institutions, and local populations.
An earlier Beach Cleanup Drive at Burmanallah Beach was organised by ZSI on May 30, 2026. The program’s objectives were to increase public knowledge of marine pollution, encourage ethical trash disposal, and emphasise the significance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. Eighty-eight people actively participated in the initiative, including ZSI scientists and personnel, JNRM students, local social workers, PRI members, including the Pradhan and ward members, and volunteers from different departments and organisations. Together, the participants cleared the beach of large amounts of plastic garbage, trash, and non-biodegradable detritus, improving coastal habitats and highlighting the necessity of ongoing environmental action.
The global theme of World Environment Day 2026 “Inspired by Nature”. For Climate was reflected in both activities. “For Our Future” and reiterated the Zoological Survey of India’s dedication to promoting sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and environmental consciousness for coming generations.
