2nd DGP Cup A&N State Open Chess Tournament–2026 Concludes Successfully

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 28: The Andaman & Nicobar Police, in collaboration with the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA), successfully organised the 2nd DGP Cup A&N State Open Chess Tournament–2026, which concluded with the Valedictory Ceremony held at the Multipurpose Hall, Police Lines, Sri Vijaya Puram.

The ceremony was graced by Shri Ravindra Singh Yadav, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands, as the Chief Guest, along with Smt. Geeta Rani Verma, IPS, IGP, Shri A. Koan, DIGP, and other senior officers of A&N Police.

Held on 27th and 28th June 2026, the two-day tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation of 228 players from across the Islands, including police personnel, their family members, and chess enthusiasts. Conducted under FIDE Rapid Chess Regulations in the Swiss System format, the event was officiated by National-Level Arbiters and Technical Officials, ensuring fairness and high competitive standards.

Trophies, prizes, and certificates were presented to the winners during the ceremony. In the Overall Open Category, Mr. Virat J.S. secured 1st position, followed by Ms. Shrestha Vijay D. in 2nd place and Mr. Hari Prasad B. in 3rd place. Players securing 4th and 5th positions were also awarded, while consolation prizes were presented to participants placed 6th to 10th.

Winners of the Sub-Junior (Under-15) and Junior (Under-17) categories were also felicitated. Special recognition was given to the Youngest Boy and Girl Players and Veteran Men and Women Players.

Addressing the gathering, the DGP described chess as a mind sport that fosters strategic thinking, discipline, patience, concentration, and decision-making skills. He encouraged youth participation in sports to build confidence, promote healthy lifestyles, and help steer them away from drug abuse and other unlawful activities. Referring to the awareness programme held on 26th June, observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, he reiterated the role of sports in promoting a healthy and disciplined lifestyle among youth.

He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Andaman & Nicobar Police to strengthening police–public partnership through sports and community engagement.

The DGP appreciated the efforts of the ANCA, Armed Police Unit, National-Level Arbiters, Technical Officials, the organising committee, volunteers, and staff for the successful conduct of the tournament.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Smt. Niyati Mittal, Superintendent of Police (APU), reaffirming the collective commitment to promoting sportsmanship, youth empowerment, and a healthy, drug-free society.
