
Sri Vijaya Puram, July 12: The Department of Environment & Forests, A&N Administration celebrated the 77th Van Mahotsav with a ceremonial tree plantation programme at the Science Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and enhancing green cover.
Shri Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Andaman & Nicobar Islands graced the occasion as the chief guest. The ceremonial plantation was attended by Shri Ravi Horo, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Dr. Manu Vashistha, Curator, Science Centre, Shri M. Rajkumar, IFS, APCCF, Dr. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, CCF along with senior officers and officials from the Departments of Environment & Forests, Science & Technology and Education. School children also enthusiastically participated in the programme.
As part of the event, various indigenous tree species suitable to the landscape were planted by the dignitaries and students. The plantation drive aimed to promote awareness about the importance of trees in combating global warming, conserving biodiversity and ensuring a greener future for the coming generations.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest highlighted the significance of the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” and encouraged all stakeholders to organize similar plantation drives throughout the year, particularly on important occasions. He emphasized the need for greater collaboration among government departments, PRIs, NGOs, educational institutions and the general public to expand tree cover outside forest areas and foster environmental stewardship, especially among school children.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Manu Vashishtha, Curator, Science Centre expressed his gratitude to the Department of Environment & Forests for selecting the Science Centre as the venue for the ceremonial plantation marking the 77th Van Mahotsav. He underscored the importance of strengthening environmental awareness through collaborative initiatives involving educational and scientific institutions.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from officials, students and other stakeholders reinforcing the message of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” and highlighting the vital role of tree planting in securing a sustainable and healthy environment for future generations.
