Tucked away in the eastern corner of Kerala’s Palakkad district, Kollengode is a destination where nature, history and tradition blend seamlessly. Nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats, this tranquil town offers a refreshing escape from the bustle of city life, inviting visitors to experience the timeless beauty of rural Kerala.
The approach to Kollengode is a visual delight. Vast stretches of freshly planted paddy fields shimmer in vibrant shades of green, their tender seedlings swaying gracefully in the cool breeze. Framed by rugged stone hills, the landscape is a soothing panorama that instantly slows the pace of life. During the flowering season, brilliant orange and deep orange marigold fields add vibrant splashes of colour, creating a striking contrast against the emerald countryside.
Adding further charm to the journey are extensive stretches of radiant sunflowers that turn their faces towards the sun, creating a spectacular golden carpet along the roadside. Honeybees busily collecting nectar from the blossoms add life and movement to the landscape, reminding visitors of the rich biodiversity that thrives in this fertile region. Small seating areas crafted from locally sourced wood provide ideal resting spots where travellers can pause to admire the scenery and capture memorable photographs.
One of the most eye-catching sights along the route is a life-sized elephant sculpture standing majestically amid the paddy fields. Set against the backdrop of the hills, it has become a favourite landmark for travellers, symbolising the region’s close bond with nature and Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. The beautifully landscaped area also features attractive heart-shaped LED light installations and the popular ‘I Love Kollengode’ display, making it a favourite destination for families and photography enthusiasts. The attraction includes two privately managed field enclosures, each thoughtfully developed to offer visitors an immersive experience amidst the paddy fields. An entry fee of ₹30 per person provides access to these enclosures, where the breathtaking backdrop of rugged stone hills adorned with multiple cascading waterfalls creates a truly mesmerising setting. The entire area comes alive every evening, with large crowds thronging the site from around 3 p.m. until 8.30 p.m.
The management deserves appreciation for maintaining a clean environment by providing plastic waste collection bins at strategic locations. Equally commendable are the prominently displayed notices declaring the premises a strictly alcohol-free and no-smoking zone, helping preserve its family-friendly atmosphere and pristine surroundings.
The region’s fertile soil has long made Kollengode one of Palakkad’s most productive agricultural belts. Rice, coconut, vegetables and seasonal flowers thrive here, sustaining generations of farming families whose lives remain closely intertwined with the rhythms of nature. The lush green fields stretching towards the horizon present a captivating spectacle, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon months when the countryside is at its most vibrant.
Kollengode’s royal heritage lends the town a distinctive character. Once ruled by the Kollengode Rajas, the area continues to preserve echoes of its regal past through traditional architecture, ancient temples and enduring cultural practices. The historic Kollengode Palace, though modest in scale, stands as a reminder of a bygone era and the region’s rich cultural legacy.
A short drive from the town leads to the serene Pothundy Dam. Surrounded by calm waters and lush greenery, the reservoir offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can enjoy panoramic views, cool breezes and moments of quiet reflection. The tranquil surroundings make it an ideal destination for families, photographers and nature lovers.
The town also reveals another fascinating aspect of its culture, its remarkable passion for football. During major international tournaments, especially the FIFA World Cup, roadsides come alive with towering flex banners of football legends and colourful national flags representing competing nations. Friendly rivalries between supporters transform the quiet countryside into a festive arena, reflecting Kerala’s enduring love for the beautiful game.
Equally captivating is the simplicity of everyday life. Farmers tending their fields, roadside tea stalls serving steaming cups of tea, bustling local markets and warm, welcoming residents create an atmosphere that feels authentic and unhurried. Visitors can also savour the subtle flavours of traditional Palakkad cuisine, prepared with fresh, locally grown ingredients. As there are only a handful of eateries in the area, travellers have limited dining choices when hunger strikes. Popular roadside establishments such as Udaya Ettan’s and Chella Ettan’s serve simple, wholesome meals that are appreciated by visitors. However, better attention to hygiene and sanitation would greatly enhance the dining experience. While preserving the rustic charm of their traditional thatched-roof structures, the authorities should ensure that basic cleanliness and food safety standards are maintained, as the presence of houseflies can be a cause for concern. A clean toilet is also essential.
Unlike many commercial tourist destinations, Kollengode has retained its quiet charm and natural character. It is a place where the cool breeze carries the fragrance of wet earth, where endless green fields soothe the eyes, and where the majestic Western Ghats stand watch over a landscape shaped by nature, agriculture and tradition.
Kollengode is far more than a scenic village. It is a destination that deserves to be discovered, admired and remembered, a timeless jewel where Kerala’s natural beauty, agricultural abundance and cultural heritage come together in perfect harmony.
