
Diglipur, July 20: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sitanagar, buzzed with excitement and enthusiasm as it celebrated International Chess Day with a series of vibrant events and competitions on July 19. The day witnessed the active participation of students from various classes, showcasing their interest and awareness in the ancient mind sport of chess.
The celebration began with a rally by students through the nearby village, holding placards to promote the importance of learning chess and engaging in sports for overall student development. The rally successfully spread awareness among the locals, highlighting how chess sharpens mental skills and fosters strategic thinking.
A painting competition for students of Classes VI to VIII drew about 100 participants, including many girls, who vividly depicted the game’s intellectual appeal through their artwork. The colorful creations reflected students’ passion and creative understanding of the game.
For senior students of Classes XI and XII, a Chess Quiz Competition was conducted in the school library as part of an Inter-House event. The competition witnessed a thrilling contest, with Mary Kom House and P.V. Sindhu House emerging joint winners, having scored equal points. Neeraj Chopra House and Harmanpreet Singh House also performed commendably, sharing the Runner-up position.
Adding further value to the event, documentary films on world-renowned chess legends were screened to inspire young minds with the success stories of grandmasters and international champions. These films offered insights into the dedication and brilliance required to excel in chess.
The highlight of the day was the Inter-House Chess Competition, where budding players showcased their tactical skills, intellectual agility, and sportsmanship. The matches were marked by intense concentration and healthy competition, reflecting the growing interest in chess among students.
