Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 5: The A&N Islands Khadi and Village Industries Board (A&NIKVIB) organized a special awareness programme at Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasthi on Aug. 2 to promote Khadi among the younger generation and instil in them the spirit of self-reliance and patriotism that Khadi symbolizes.
The event featured a presentation on the importance of Khadi, its historical significance in India’s freedom struggle, and its relevance in today’s sustainable living movement. Students were also given a live demonstration of the charkha (spinning wheel), providing them with a hands-on experience of traditional Khadi-making techniques.
Adding further value to the programme were exhibits of Khadi fabrics and costumes, which showcased the texture, variety, and versatility of Khadi as a fabric of the future with roots in India’s rich past.
A Senior teacher of the school graced the occasion as the chief guest and inaugurated the programme by garlanding the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Khadi movement in India. In his address, he emphasized the importance of embracing indigenous products and fostering pride in India’s cultural heritage.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 120 students and teachers. The programme successfully rekindled awareness about Khadi as not just a fabric but a way of life that promotes self-sufficiency, eco-consciousness, and national pride.
