Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 7: The Andaman Nicobar Chamber of Commerce & Industry has requested the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration to reconsider the proposal to increase the cost of electricity in the Islands. In a letter to the Chief Secretary, the Chamber said that it understands that a proposal is under consideration by the Electricity Department for a substantial increase in the power tariff across all sectors in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The Chamber mentioned that the South Andaman region is currently facing a severe power crisis, resulting in frequent and prolonged power cuts. These disruptions have caused significant distress and resentment among consumers from all sections of society.
Introducing a tariff hike at this juncture, when the power supply itself remains unreliable, is likely to further aggravate public dissatisfaction and invite strong pushback from consumers.
In view of the prevailing situation, the Chamber requested the Chief Secretary’s intervention to review and reconsider the proposed tariff hike by the Electricity Department.
